Managing Your Time

By: Stylicia Bowden

As a student the concept of managing your time well is important. The college lifestyle is filled with papers, deadlines, projects and assignments. It sometimes can become stressful if you do not understand the importance of time.

Time is the wealthiest commodity we own. Whether young or old time does not wait but passes us by if we are not spending it wisely. In order to manage it wisely you have to  organize your time.

The best way to organize your time effectively is by learning how to prioritize your life. When you learn how to prioritize your life you manage your time responsibly. For college students time management is critical especially when there are other demands such as children, a spouse and a job.

Below are five steps to help you manage your time better and implement a plan to be stress free during your college journey.

  • Create a schedule: When life gets in the way it is good to have a schedule or list of all the things you need to do for the week. Figure out which assignments are due that week and how much time you have to dedicate to them.
  • No procrastination: It is never good to procrastinate so if you can complete an assignment early do it to stay ahead.
  • Ask for help: Don’t let your pride get in the way; ask for assistance. Trident Technical College offers tutoring at The Learning Center in Bldg. 920 Rm. 211. They also offer writing assistance as well.
  • Take a break: Sometimes college courses can be overwhelming; always make time to take a break in between your study time. It will help refresh your mind.
  • Study Groups. Creating a study group for accountability can help you manage your time well. It is great to be around other like-minded people to encourage you to succeed.

Your time is precious so make the best out of it and know your college years can be your best years of your life!

Grades!

By: Mary Kiser

The product of a student's sweat, blood, and tears.

People attend Trident Tech for a variety of reasons. Some classes are available to high school students, it is more affordable than state university, and there is a melting pot of resources. Any student here knows that grades are the key to graduation, even if said grades are difficult to manage in between work, kids, and/or daily activities. However, teachers, guidance counselors, and staff can assuage the burden.

The Learning Center is one of the best outlets a student can utilize. Tutors and workshops can assist any person that struggles with several subjects like Spanish, Math, and/or English. The volunteers and employees are there to guide anyone through difficult classes or unmanageable assignments. If this is of interest to any of Trident Times readers, then head to Bldg. 920/ Rm. 211 or call 843-574-6409 to schedule an appointment. Go to “Student Resources” on Trident’s website for more information about other locations for other campuses other than Main.

The Library is another viable option. It’s located at the Main Campus in Bldg. 510, and it is open between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and it is also open Friday and Saturday. Novels and magazines are not the only valuables there. Librarians can guide a student to important books that pertain to his or her field of study, and they can answer questions about the website, how to navigate it, and cardinal links through the Databases/Articles section of Trident's website.

School can act as a second job, but it does not have to be the onerous one of the two. The work can be a meandering road to dullsville, but that A on a finished paper or essay will be worth the travel.

Look Alive!

By: Mary Kiser

I can admit that I take my safety for granted. My morning commute to the Mt. Pleasant Trident Campus has the same level of excitement as the lull of movie credits, and I have more fingers on one hand than thoughts about my general well-being on a college campus. But on October 1, 2015, yet another gutless act of violence on college students plagued America with its prescence. While my Thursday morning consisted of Diet Coke, lectures in Spanish, and prep for final exams, the students attending Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon were fighting to save themselves and each other. A man, identified by some officers as Chris Harper Mercer, shot and killed multiple students. While police eliminated the problem, nine people lost their lives and seven were injured due to a senseless and morally devoid act of gun violence.
While the media seems to have been more focused on Republican debates, Syria, and the Clinton emails, the ugly issue of gun control comfortably hid in the groves of this country’s significant drama. But not even four months after the Emanuel AME shooting, yet another grisly crime has been executed on innocent people who weren’t harming anything or anybody. If you watched President Obama’s response on BBC, then you could hear the stress, disappointment, and demand for tighter gun laws and stricter regulation of firearms. And I agree with him. How many more people are going to die because an unstable man or woman has easy access to weapons? Enough is enough! If guns aren’t regulated or background checks delegated, then the price to pay won’t be cars, clothes, houses, or even financial security. It will be someone’s mom, dad, brother, sister, son, or daughter.

Manage Your Time Efficiently

by Chloe West

College can be the most difficult stage of school for many of us, and it doesn’t help that most grades recorded are from tests. With the stress and anxiety that we all go through trying to prepare for a test, sometimes cramming the night before becomes the norm in studying. However, a little known fact is that when a student crams all of the information in right before a test, not very much of the material is actually retained.    The best way to study is to take it in pieces and study a little bit each day before a test.

Trident Tech's New Student Portal

by Chloe West, Mary Gorton, Tyler Durham

In order to access all of our student and class information, Trident Tech students have to sign into TTC Express, then Google E-mail, and then D2L. That’s at least three tabs open right there. Could you imagine how simple it would be to be able to login just one time and have your TTC Express menu, unread e-mails, and your D2L courses all in one place?
Trident Technical College, for the first time, is making this possible. Going live on October 23, 2012, is the new student portal system, my.tridenttech.edu, built to make our lives easy.
The individuals that proposed this project are TTC’s own Joe Gibson, Director of the Information Technology Training Center; Dawn Higdon, Director of Web Services Department; and Lynne Ankersen, Assistant Vice President of Student Services. We met with the three of them in order to view a demo of the new portal, and, boy, were we impressed.

Five Reasons Students Should Join a Club at TTC

Photo by Candice Bizzell of the TTC Photo Club
by Candice Bizzell

Most students are not aware that Trident Tech has over 40 different active clubs and organizations for students to get involved in. Joining a club or organization in college has many benefits, but perhaps the top five reasons to join one here at Trident Tech are that clubs help you to meet new people, increase self-esteem, improve grades, discover a new career path, and build a stronger resume. Who would have thought that being involved in campus life could do so much for you?

Need Writing Help?

By Zaneta Kennedy

A new semester means new classes and, of course, new assignments. Many classes require essay writing, whether it is in history, art appreciation, or English. Many students dread writing term papers simply because they haven’t the knowledge or resources to compose a clear and concise essay.

This is where Ms. Cameron Sperry comes in. She is a writing tutor who offers help to all TTC students currently enrolled in any TTC class. Ms. Sperry does not write, edit, or proofread papers for students. The assistance she offers involves helping students learn to recognize the problems they have and the types of errors they make in their own writing, with the goal of helping the students improve their overall writing skills.

What is the Student Activity Period?

by Theo LeGree

The last Student Activity Period of the semester is Monday, March 26, 10:20-11:20, and you will have no classes then. Contrary to popular belief, the Student Activity Period is not time for students to leave or lounge around on campus. The Student Activity Period is time set aside from academic learning for students to get involved in student organizations. Student organizations hold meetings monthly during the Activity Period. The college cancels classes for an hour each month because the college president, Dr. Mary Thornley, feels that you being involved in campus clubs and organizations is that important.

How Does Logging On from One Place Sound?

By Joe Gibson

Have you ever wished your TTC email, TTC Express, and D2L courses were all available in one place with one logon? Well, it’s coming. A new and improved my.tridenttech web portal will be launched in Fall 2012. The goal of the my.tridenttech portal is to improve communication and provide a single point of access to applications and information for faculty, staff, and students. The new portal will provide single sign-on access to TTC Express, D2L courses and student email (Gmail) from one location.

This means no more multiple logins to these systems. Students will also be able to easily access their my.tridenttech email and view calendar events from the portal home page. The portal is geared to make a student’s college life easier, improve access to critical information, and help him or her stay connected.

Stuff a 40-Something Freshman Says

By Vickie Trippe
  • Hey…Captain Obvious…laying on your horn in the parking lot traffic gridlock really isn’t helping.
  • You’re not as interesting as you think you are – use your ‘inside voice’ in the hallways and between classes.
  • Are you really so tired you need to lie down in the hallway between classes? Five Hour Energy drinks…get some.
  • Did Mommy pick your classes and make you take one on Friday? Complain to her then.

Charleston Clemente Course at Trident

By David Zidlick

I have found that life is not always fair, and life is not always equal. But one trait mankind has always shared is the desire to prevail against life’s challenges. There have always been those who refused to quit, who refused to stop trying. Poverty, homelessness or a life isolated from the opportunities of a formal education can be among the most difficult challenges one can face. I faced these challenges myself. “Book learning” did not seem as immediately practical as the “school of hard knocks,” but I learned through the Clemente Course that the skills learned in school are invaluable. Those skills not only helped me meet my basic needs, but they gave me the tools to advance my life.

2011-2012 Pell Grant Changes: How Will You be Affected?

By Taylor Hastings

Federal Financial aid demands are at an all time high, and funding at a low point. In 2011, nine million undergraduate students were awarded Pell Grants. However, Congress voted to change the Federal Pell Grant program for the next year.

What is a Pell Grant? A Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid.  The maximum Pell grant for the 2011-12 award year (July 1, 2011, to June 30, 2012) is $5,550.  The amount you receive depends on your financial need, costs to attend school, status as a full-time or part-time student, and plans to attend school for a full academic year or less. A number of students at Trident Technical College receive financial aid in the form of Pell Grants.

There’s an App for That!

By Nicole Thomas
Managing college life can be challenging, overwhelming and downright frustrating. From picking classes and wrestling financial aid to juggling a part time job and a full class load to navigating the 920 building, we can sometimes feel doomed. Have no fear, there’s an app for that!
I would highly suggest that if you don’t already have one, spend some of that financial aid on a smart phone, iPad or other device that supports “apps.” There are apps for everything from games (hello, Angry Birds?) to calorie counting. But, the seldom discussed, most valuable apps out there are the ones for students.

Low Cost Beauty Services on Campus

By Zaneta Kennedy
Did you know that you can get a free or low cost haircut at Trident Tech? In fact, there are several services offered through the TTC Cosmetology Department for less than five dollars.
The Cosmetology Department offers a number of services at the Berkeley Campus: highlights, under-the dryer deep conditioning, relaxers and more. These services are open to the public, and walk-ins are accepted. Sometimes, certain services can be arranged for free if there is a need; contact a cosmetology instructor for more information. To make an appointment, call 899-8052.

Loving the Library

By Eric Benhall
Some associate libraries with shelves and shelves of antiquated volumes. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here at Trident Technical College, we have access to an enormous amount of information. In addition to the materials available for physical checkout, the TTC library offers students many online avenues, too. The best place to start your academic success at Trident Tech is with the library orientation videos. They are found under the “Research Help” tab on the library’s homepage.
