Society for Medical Laboratory Technology: Two Service Projects

The Society for Medical Laboratory Technology (SMLT) has two on-going service projects with which it would love your help.

The SMLT is collecting Box Tops for Education to be given to the Mary Ford Elementary school to help them purchase items they need.  This is part of a state-wide project in which all of the MLT programs across the state are collecting the Box Tops for a local school of their choice.  The MLT program that collects the most box tops will get a nice prize (this has yet to be determined by the SCSCLS board).  The competition will end in March with the SCSCLS Student Bowl, an annual competition in which the SMLT participates. 

The SMLT will be setting out collection boxes across the campus to collect items needed by Camp Burnt Gin.  Camp Burnt Gin is a summer camp in Wedgefield, South Carolina, for children who have physical disabilities and chronic illnesses.  It is a service of the DHEC Maternal and Child Health Bureau/Division of Children with Special Health Care Needs.  With support of public and private funds, DHEC has operated Camp Burnt Gin since 1945 to provide summer camping experiences for children and young adults with chronic illnesses or disabling conditions.  Due to budget cuts, they have just enough money from DHEC to stay open.  Most of the items are cheap and easy to obtain.  Gently used items are definitely accepted, so if you have any of these items lying around, please help!  Please drop off donations at FATZ Cafe by Tanger Outlet under the name Allen Wadford.  Below is a wish list for the camp.

Most students are not aware that Trident Tech has over 40 different active clubs and organizations for students to get involved in. Joining a club or organization in college has many benefits, but perhaps the top five reasons to join one here at Trident Tech are that clubs help you to meet new people, increase self-esteem, improve grades, discover a new career path, and build a stronger resume. Who would have thought that being involved in campus life could do so much for you?

Two TTC Clubs Collect Donations for Two Causes

Two TTC campus organizations are working hard to raise goods and awareness for community groups in need. You may have noticed new collection boxes in the 100 building, room 111. Student organizations Alpha Mu Gamma and Roots and Shoots are sponsoring two service projects and collecting goods in these giant bins. This is an opportunity to help our community, near and far, in a variety of ways.   

One of the organizations being helped is Keeper of the Wild, a non-profit organization that cares for sick, injured, orphaned or displaced animals, depends upon public support and funds to accomplish its goals. Their ultimate goal is to place the animals back in their natural habitat. Founded by Janet Kinser, the organization has been serving South Carolina and wild animals in need for over 20 years. Kinser, licensed as a rehabilitator through the SC Dept. of Natural Resources, has, according to the group’s website, “made herself and her home a haven for wild animals that have nowhere to go”. In addition to taking in and rehabilitating animals, the organization presents educational programs to increase public awareness about SC wildlife.  

Phi Theta Kappa Wins Award

Trident Technical College’s Alpha Epsilon Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa brought home top honors at the South Carolina Technical Education Association (SCTEA) luncheon on February 24, in Myrtle Beach. The Student Community Involvement Project competition is designed to allow students in the Technical College system to showcase their community outreach projects. 

TTC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter submitted their international honors project, “A Soldier’s Safety Net.” This project included creating a website that would help transitioning soldiers and their families as they go from military to civilian life. Alpha Epsilon Omicron created this project after learning that during this transition Veterans find themselves in the most need of assistance. They created a website that is a database of services available to veterans.

What is the Student Activity Period?

The last Student Activity Period of the semester is Monday, March 26, 10:20-11:20, and you will have no classes then. Contrary to popular belief, the Student Activity Period is not time for students to leave or lounge around on campus. The Student Activity Period is time set aside from academic learning for students to get involved in student organizations. Student organizations hold meetings monthly during the Activity Period. The college cancels classes for an hour each month because the college president, Dr. Mary Thornley, feels that you being involved in campus clubs and organizations is that important.
