The Charleston community is well-known for coming together to help one another out, and here are some of the many ways you can help. Likewise, you can reach many of these same people if you yourself are in need of assistance during this time.

Campus Vigilante

Armed with over a dozen superhero costumes and a determination to help others, Robert Jenkins suits up to inspire the community and promote generosity. All of Robert’s costumes are homemade.

“I learned how to read through comic books ... So I can take a $10 shirt, add some paint to it, add some creativity, and create the things that I want — and maybe inspire a young kid to do the same thing. I don't like wearing name-brand things because they don't contribute to the community,” explains Jenkins.

A photography student here at Trident Technical College, Robert has earned the nickname “Spidey” amongst his peers. He considers his Spiderman costume his best and most recognizable. Though he is quick to point out that the Batman costume draws more attention from the ladies. His superpowers do not include flying or super strength, just a big heart and a willingness to help those in need.

Robert is an activist that enjoys volunteering. You can find him at the local soup kitchen on Friday nights, ensuring nobody cuts in line, sitting in on city council meetings speaking up for the poor and homeless, or eating at Relish Café on campus smiling and waving to everyone who walks by. Robert Jenkins is a real life superhero, inspiring the community one costume at a time.

 

 

 

Who’s interested in making a little extra money?

Being a student can be difficult. We need to juggle a multitude of responsibilities and never seem to have the needed funds by the end of the month. Some of us work two jobs and still have a difficult time making ends meet. Do you ever feel as if there are just not enough hours in the day? Would you like to earn some extra money without heaping additional stress on yourself? Who wouldn’t?

 
Three months ago I discovered an establishment which not only keeps spending money in my pocket, but gives me an opportunity to be part of changing people’s lives. By offering my time or a mere three hours a week, I am able to earn “easy money” and walk away with a feeling of accomplishment. Within miles of our school, there exists a facility that allows those with health issues to receive life-giving medicines. It is Octapharma Plasma and it is within miles of Trident Technical College.

Octapharma is a donation center whose primary goal is to collect life-giving plasma which will be made into medicines that help save people’s lives. Plasma is the clear portion of your blood that carries your red cells, white cells and platelets throughout your body. It is completely safe to donate plasma and the fine staff of Octapharma will go to any lengths to ensure that your experience is a pleasant one. Donors are allowed to give plasma twice a week and you will be compensated immediately following your donation.

“Some donors have friends or family members that benefit from plasma products. Others enjoy both the extra compensation and the satisfaction of helping patients. Whatever the reason, donors are making an important commitment to their families and communities. They are heros, saving lives through the simple process of donating plasma. On March 4, 2015 the Charleston Southern University Criminal Justice Department is planning a Law Enforcement Expo. I would like to invite the Trident Technical College Criminal Justice faculty and students to attend this major Low Country event. This will be from 9 am – 3 pm at the University.  We have invited law enforcement agencies from all over the area to participate in the LE Expo. We will be providing demonstrations, displays, cars, equipment, job fair booths and any other items or interesting aspects of law enforcement. We will also be providing some or all, K-9 demonstrations, Tactical demonstrations, Bike Patrol demonstration, Simulators, Patrol Cars for competition, Mobile Command Post display, Forensic Display, Tactical Vehicle display, Equipment display and much more.

Coastal Carolina Fair

     Autumn is among us, so you know what that means—the fair is coming to town. The Coastal Carolina Fair opens for its 56th year on October 25th, and this year it is extended to 11 days. That’s right: the fair is open for a second Sunday for the first time ever.
There will be 62 exciting rides, including the Crazy Mouse roller coaster, Mega Drop, Space Roller, 4 Ferris Wheels, and much more. 

Review of the Terrace Theatre

      Do you ever find yourself getting bored with seeing quirky romance comedies and overblown action flicks at the movie theater?  I do, which is why I see movies at the Terrace Theatre. 
     The Terrace is an independent film theater on James Island that was first opened by Marcie Marzluff in 1997 (Coles).  It has since won numerous awards: it was voted one of Moviefone’s top 12 independent film theaters in America, one of the top places to visit in Charleston by The New York Times, and the best local theater in 2009 by the Charleston City Paper (Amaker).

Imagine riding a horse, but not just any horse. You have trained this horse so well that you envision receiving recognition for what you have achieved. This is what many Lowcountry horseback riders now have the opportunity to do, thanks to the Tall Pines Horse Show Circuit. Since their first show, Tall Pines has been drawing a huge horse enthusiastic crowd, and they are one of the very few show circuits in the area.

Why fishing? South Carolinians are blessed with a wonderfully tangled web of water and land. Fish is a mainstay in our culture, recipes, tourism and economy. Charleston offers a great variety of fish, temperate weather, and numerous bodies of water. Fortunately, fishing is inexpensive, local, and without a dress code. Charleston’s waterways never close up shop. And fishing can be whatever you want it to be, casual or competitive, enjoyed individually or with your friends and family.  Did I mention it is for women too? Men can no longer keep the fun all to themselves. Fishing is for everyone.
